Amazing charities which celebrate diversity in STEM

BBSTEM  (Black British in STEM) is a non-profit organisation campaigning for balance and representation of Black individuals in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

BBSTEM encourage, enable, and energise individuals in business, industry, and education to widen participation and contribution of Black individuals in STEM. The professional network of BBSTEM members aims to inspire the young Black British generation to pursue STEM subjects in university and beyond. The principal mission is to have Black parity in the UK’s STEM workforce, from school to the highest level in industry.

Pride in STEM was founded in 2016 by Dr. Alfredo Carpineti together with his husband Chris, and Matt Young, a graduate researcher at the University of Nottingham. 

Pride in STEM is a charitable trust with nine trustees who are based in the UK and US. They run events and activities together with an extensive network of volunteers from around the UK and abroad. Their goal has been to raise the profile of LGBT+ people in science, technology, engineering and maths/medicine (STEM) as well as to highlight the struggles LGBTSTEM people often face.

Diversity in UK Polar Science Logo

Diversity in UK Polar Science Initiative (DIPSI), conceived and funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) Polar Regions Department, celebrates existing diversity, and takes an important step forward to promote and enhance Antarctic science opportunities to under-represented groups, including women, people from ethnic minorities, BAME, LGBTQ+ community and people with a disability. The initiative called Polar Horizons started in 2020 looked to bring together studying and non-studying students from diverse backgrounds. Although shorten by COVID-19, this inclusive event proceeded to have a profound impact on those who attended.  To find out about the report, please click here

We the Curious Logo

We The Curious (WTC) We The Curious is an idea and a place for everyone. The venue on Bristol’s harbourside is akin to an indoor festival, with all sorts of different experiences, where people can interact with exhibits, test stuff out and participate rather than just visit.

WTC are an educational charity, all about empowering everyone to ask questions and get creative - with boundaries removed between science, art, people and ideas - a culture of curiosity.
